Insomnia is a major problem that people seem to face. Becomming irritable and cranky are a few symptoms of insomnia. It can greatly affect your daily activities because of the lack of sleep received, especially your motor skills. There are three major causes for insomnia which are psychological, physical, and temporary causes.

Psychological causes are some of the primary reasons for insomnia. Anxiety and stress are some of the psychological aspects that can occur. Anxiety is when someone may have feelings of tension, uncertainty, helplessness or fear. This relates to how your current problems affect you. This can also relate to stress, because stress is how you cope with said problems. These types of problems can make sleeping very difficult and a consistent lack of sleep can cause even more problems later on which is why it is important to seek help if this develops into a major problem. There are also many physical issues that can cause insomnia. Things such as pregnancy, medical conditions and genetics can all be reasons for insomnia.

Short term factors can also lead to insomnia. If you do not have a bedtime routine, you might want to consider one to help get your internal clock back on schedule. Things like working different shifts can ruin the sleeping periods your body is used to and tries to adjust to the new schedule. If you keep changing this schedule, your body isn’t going to know what to do. Excessive use of caffeine and alcohol can make getting to sleep difficult as well, or at the least, cause fragmented sleep which prevents you from getting to an REM stage of sleep.
